How to be a Blogger Meet our first blogger, Ms. Uma Devi She has a very interesting Instagram blog Darani: Hi
Uma: Hello Tell us about yourself Hi my name is Uma Devi And the name of my blog is Coffee Table Talks Am I am a Mom Blogger, A makeup blogger a skincare blogger, in other words, a Lifestyle Blogger So I do a lot of things about lifestyle fashion, and a mixture of other things I started the blog around 2014 It had started when I was working in a company and taking care of their blog which was like an online bulletin board And what happened once that was started was When the situation of leaving the company arose They ask me to start my own blog Only then did I do my research and found out there’s a thing called a personal blog And I started my own blog The name of the blog is very interesting, what’s the story behind the name? Actually, it started off as umabarath.com From my full name And finally, After a year, I realized that was not a good name for a blog Because, it was very personal, and hence Coffee Table Talks came up as that was more generic It’s like sitting with your friends over a coffee at the table So whatever you talk over a cup of coffee as girls, mainly because my content is for girls So what do we talk about? We talk about makeup, skincare, movies, etc We talk about a lot of things It was initially a mixture of everything Which I wouldn’t recommend for a beginner Because we should select a niche topic I did a lot of things And finally, I decided okay this is my niche topic The majority of my audience were women specifically women with children between the age of 25-35 I had a lot of viewers in that category So what do they like? What do they need? They’ll need things like information pregnancy, skincare husbands, boyfriends and that’s how things changed Basically, things you talk to your friends about over a cup of coffee. Hence the name How long do you spend to post a blog? Initially It starts with an Idea A theme of what you’re working so for a particular month Let’s say summer, then the topic would be Summer Skincare theme So in that month, we’ll cover skincare tips for the summer Like what to do to prevent pimples Dresses for the summer and things like that And from that, we look for resources whatever resources you have for example, if it’s about makeup I’ll make sure I have enough makeup, and if I can write about it and see if it’s enough If I will need anything, I will go out to get it and collect it from someplace And then you start writing How while writing a blog you can jot down the key points you want to talk about Like during the summer, you will have to drink water, you will sweat and other related things that arise and if you’re wearing a dress, you should wear a free and breathable dress These are all the key points We develop a story from these key points One thing we must understand is Whether the content is written or audio Viewers don’t have the attention span Only the first 30 seconds or the first 3 lines they read will stay in their mind I spend a lot of time on that writing it, etc And then titles and thumbnails All these things play a very important role Then taking a photo or a video for the blog are also time-consuming Additionally, if I am collaborating with a brand Their branding material will also be added And my personal affiliates will also be involved And finally, it publishes only when my audience is ready for it So there are statistics for that as well. So Target Audience, Time So all that can be checked using Analytics So from that, we can determine Like for a post, Friday will work well Or even on Wednesdays, so at that time I will post the blog And even after it has been posted, the process continues We will have to share it across the various social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, etc That is very important In the beginning, I used to share it with my friends For bloggers who are starting out Their friends and family are their audiences Apart from that, we need to also track who else if viewing the blog Recently I’ve felt that WhatsApp is a good medium So having WhatsApp groups It’s easier to forward messages You can forward just the points like Top 10, top 5 This Vs. This, etc all works well on WhatsApp So you’re saying, for a blog post a blogger can choose a topic they are passionate about and do the research A lot of people do this, how do you tackle the competition? Everybody can do this It’s not a big thing to do this I can get all that I need by Googling it But that’s not the point How can we make it more attractive It’s about how pleasing and attractive you can make it for the viewer And how to ensure your content gives value to the reader? First, you must read your comments and also reply to them It is a way to interact with the audience Hosting a live session on Facebook or Instagram will help in giving you more insight So people will ask you to talk about something, talk about an issue We’ll have one topic in mind like say Gucci Or Chanel I’ll have the passion to talk about a huge fashion house But for the audience, they’ll want to know about how during the summer if they want to go out they can wear makeup and not sweat And they’ll want a product for that, and that’s all they require Relatability is very important You can know a lot of things But what your audience can relate to is something you will have to understand That is possible only if you interact with them Live sessions on Facebook & Instagram has made it a lot easier So interacting is easy So marketing is the key Understanding your audience actually Is being a blogger a part-time or a full-time job So it depends on our needs To be very honest in the beginning, getting ideas to blog about will be minimum Even getting one post is a huge deal But if you keep at it and sustain, you get a good income It also depends on your needs For me, getting 10k can be a big deal To another person, that might not be enough But you need to start somewhere I started as a full-time blogger Which I would advice against I would suggest starting as a part-time blogger From that, you can get additional income and if you are loving it Because with blogging, you don’t get much money but at the same time you will have to spend And you’ll have to spend a bit Let’s say I am a make up blogger If there’s a launch for a new lipstick, I’ll get that lipstick Today, as I am writing about it, the brand is going to give it to me anyway But if I did it when I started out, I would have had to buy. That is one side I’ll have to invest in a domain or a small ad And such things Let’s say I am not a makeup blogger, I’m a lifestyle blogger If I am going for an event I’ll end up spending for the event itself travel will be an expense There I’ll have to dress up So there will be a lot of running costs Even I don’t have to do any of those things You’ll still need a phone, a camera, an internet connection, a laptop So at first, it can be considered as an investment As you go, you’ll get these things When we need to work at something, we will need some qualifications Likewise, are there any requirements to become a blogger? Bloggers not only interact with people They interact with brands as well Brands are the main source of income So we can’t count that as substantial income So sponsored blogs will give you the so-called money or huge amount So for that, you’ll need to have the soft skills You should know how to speak with people Basic etiquettes, like answering an email for example, I also work part-time in influencer marketing I have seen many influencers send emails without a subject As a PR representative, we’ll just ignore it They go through multiple emails, They’ll send links as Handles. Links should be sent as links Having that attention to detail is important So knowing how to interact with people is important Knowing what to say when you’re attending a call or nor So brands will get the feeling that they are professional when they are giving you money and if they have a target in mind, even though you don’t have enough followers or engagement They will have some confidence in you They’ll think that you are professional and you’ll get the work done In short, professionalism is important in blogging Knowledge in your field In terms of your monetary investment You get money from Brands & Google where else do you get it from? There’s something called affiliations For example, let’s take Amazon. Amazon has affiliates It is a kind of partnership Let’s say there’s a couch, I’ll tell people I’ve bought it and so should you I’ll tell them where I bought it from and give them a link So when someone clicks on that link You won’t lose any money you’re going to pay the same amount of money that I paid But Amazon will give me a commission of 5-10% Because you’re the marketing medium That is what affiliate is This is not only there on Amazon, but it’s also on other platforms as well Once again if I have to mention something I’d say content is King Let’s say after everything if only 4 people are going to read your blog post 4 for them won’t buy As they say, it’s a funnel, stage by stage the people convert And you might end up not getting a sale So only if your content is good, it will at least reach 1000 people out which 100 would click,10 would think and 1 would buy That’s how affiliates work According to me, the major income comes through brands and brand collaboration The audience, however, don’t take it well That is because they will feel like you’re selling We also reject a lot of things I personally don’t believe in fairness creams, so I personally reject We don’t show that we’ve rejected And certain products you’ll know that it’s fake So we don’t endorse them We use some products To see if they’re worth it and safe we promote those products sometimes, people say it’s too much There are bloggers, who do it smoothly and people won’t realize that they would have partnered So that is also a talent that one must have So only if you can market your product smartly can you sell it of course, we also buy things Brands don’t give money for everything that we do In collaboration, there are two types one is paid collaboration the other is barter, where they will give us a product for free and we will have to review it Beginners follow the barter system As your popularity increases, you can demand So the first step of collaboration is barter As your popularity increases you can demand payment It’s not exactly like that It depends on the brand and their need Some brands are genuine They’ll check engagement say you have 1000 followers and if 100 people like your content, that is a good engagement that is all that they see some brands see the numbers Based on that they will decide if they should pay you or do a barter So it’s a brands decision it depends on their budget it’s about your comfort level the product might be really good, you won’t be able to resist so you will agree to a barter there are people who want to do only paid collabs as well What tips would you like to give our viewers who want to become bloggers? don’t blog because you want money if you have content that you would really like to share like weight loss or travel something that was really interesting that you want to share do that as a blog whatever that passion is put it into writing or a photo or video or whatever don’t expect money to come immediately If you’re lucky, you’ll get money when you start and don’t lose hope if you’re not getting to where you want Thank you so much for your time, you should check out coffeetabletalks for sure she posts a lot of related content, so you should definitely check it out The next blogger is living the life we want to we are gonna meet Mr. Keshavan Tell us what your blog is all about It’s called Engineers foodie, and it’s a food blog It’s all about food Let’s take Pani Puri as an example We’ve had it for Rs. 20 We’ve also eaten for Rs. 200 It’s about finding good food in the right place If I have a bad experience it a good thing to let people know So they’ll know what to expect If I tell them it’s good they’ll have different expectations That is what my blog is all about We cover food from everywhere, be it street food or star hotel Is it run only by you or do you have a team? It’s run only by me I’ll have ideas of my own that I am keen on And I cannot compromise on it So whatever I am posting comes only from me What is the story behind starting this blog? It’s a combination of it all Watching the various things my mom cooked intrigued me So one night, I randomly decided to make some parottas Told my mom I’d make Kothu Parotta It was nothing, 2 eggs, salt and pepper and I made Kothu Parotta I tasted it, and obviously, I made it and it was very good That was my first pixel, I still remember it, recording it from my computer And from that intrigue, my love for food grew I started cooking. I used to make a big mess I used to break things also Then I started exploring things What kind of food do we have in Chennai What kind of variety do we have That’s when I started going out more, they gave me freedom at home too I was doing it from my personal profile It was only my pictures, then a combination of both food and me Then food pictures dominated my feed Then my friends suggested that I start my own page At that time I had no idea how to start I just wanted people to know how good or bad a place was So you didn’t start this with the aim of making money So how did you get there? How did you commercialize your blog? So like I said, initially I had no idea this would be the response Moreover, as far as I know, when I started out Only celebrities were influencers Later, little by little, while getting into it I met a lot of people and came to know about the various kinds of influencers And the follower count, etc I paid for my first food invite Then they were like, no need to pay, just give us your honest review That’s when I found out these things exist. But even then we didn’t work for invites The passion for food was always there Let’s say in your page you post something, 10 people respond, 2 buy the product That satisfaction of helping a brand is there And that’s when I knew I could do something Engineers foodie is not about getting a product, putting it up on my feed It should have a dual takeaway That’s how the payment thing started out What advice would you give the new food bloggers? Don’t go behind followers Be organic Only organic followers can covert and actually buy the product You need a lot of patience with Instagram Basically on Instagram, The growth of the page takes a long time If you’re patient, consistent and passionate you will like your page, in turn, people will convert, and it will grow If not food, what is the other topic would you have chosen to blog about I’ve always liked taking photoshoots, I’ve wanted to be the Model But I’ve never thought about it So I’ve always stuck to food because it was what I actually wanted to do What are the basic qualifications that a food blogger or in fact any blogger needs? More than talent, being passionate about your topic is important be it fashion or lifestyle Let’s say they’re starting an Instagram page They should be consistent and not think about the followers They should be happy and satisfied with the content they post And update their followers regularly Stories are a one-day thing, so in that one day depending on the impact that they can leave, they’ll know how big their page is Stories have the most interaction, and you get immediate replies as well Posts have a higher reach, but stories have greater engagement Stories show that you are actually in that place at that time Take engineers foodie, I will post 10 stories a day and have food to have that touch Having that connection with the audience is important. You can have IGTVs, hashtags Choosing the right hashtags is important If someone wants to pursue a career in blogging, would recommend they do it part-time or full time? Keep working or studying and do this on the side and as you grow, to honest not everyone grows Not all pages will grow You need to stand out For example, there are thousands of pages in fashion you will need to grow and come up If you see a potential business and see a lot of products come your way, you can take it full time So I would suggest to start and then see how it goes 5 years from now where do you see blogging? Before it was on a website Now thanks to Instagram, IGTV & posts are the main medium of blogs So 5 years from now, where do you think blogging is headed to? Another social media, not Instagram So like how Facebook fell, so will Instagram But blogs will still be based on videos & photos Text blogs are long gone Not that people are not reading them But everyone has a smartphone now so with a tap, I can just scroll If I can tell my story in a picture, I wouldn’t have to sit and type out a huge blog In 5 years, videos will take over They will create a huge impact, we can already see it on Instagram Like IGTV etc. Videos reach more Thank you so much for taking time off and coming here and answering all my questions You must all check out his Instagram page His handle is @ingenious_foodie You know where to go the next time you’re thinking about food We are now gonna meet Mr. Gopinath Rajendran His Instagram handle is mistermadras Tell us about yourself and why you chose mistermadras There’s no big reason I used to write reviews for food and I’ve always wanted to start a food blog I used to post on my own There are a lot of platforms that exist to write about food. But when it came to what I wanted to do Was have everything that I did under one platform That’s when I decided to start a blog And that that time, having the Madras name was the in thing. You yourself would be following a few of these pages And being a hardcore Chennai boy, I wanted to have the Madras name So while brainstorming for a name with Madras in it To be honest, I was watching a movie called Mr. Madras And I thought it sounded good I wanted a blog that is all things Madras And I felt that this name would fit perfectly Could you please explain what a blog is to a beginner? We can call a blog a website It is essentially a diary, a diary that other people can read that you post online There is a website for every topic For example, there is a website for food reviews there is a website for travel reviews And based on interests that people have, websites exist To me, a blog is a single platform for all these interests I like talking about food, movies, bike rides, I would also feel like sharing other content as well So essentially a space to put my content to me is a blog What are the qualifications a person would need to become a blogger? I think the only qualifications you will need are a laptop/phone and an internet connection You don’t need to pay to have a blog There are many platforms you can log in from You can create your account And that becomes your space, which you can share with whoever Be it Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc That is, sharing your knowledge with other people. As far I know, many bloggers They use it as a way to vent People will want to write about their feelings Be it good or bad, they’ll want to get it out of their mind and tell people about it There might be people who feel the same, but don’t say anything They’ll be very private Are you a part-time or full-time blogger? I’m actually a cinema journalist For me, blogging is a passion It’s not exactly part-time or full-time I do it because it makes me happy Predominantly it is a platform where I write about movies & food Blogging has become commercialized today And there is a lot of competition. How do you tackle that? How do you find your forte That depends on why someone is writing a blog For example, I write blogs because I found a space to write about my feelings on things I didn’t get into it to get money There are ways to get money, but I don’t use them What kind of a blog can a beginner write to gain popularity In our country, fashion is a big trend So for a beginner, writing about fashion is a good start DIY & how-to videos are also good In our country, any topic is a good topic You can write about photography, cooking, books, etc I know a guy who writes about stamps Another guy writes about Butterflies There are blogs for a specific audience These kinda blogs again don’t go behind money It way of them showing off their hobbies It is a way to express their interests What are the Dos & Donts for a blogger? There are no predefined rules But you can say there are guidelines For example, If you’re writing about food it is nice to have pictures And it’s great if you use your photos If you take someone else’s photos or take off Google, it is ethical to give credits Let’s say I want to write about Vada Pav, If I google it I’ll find pictures posted by others I can post it on my page and give them credits There are these small ethical things Content too, If it is too big, nobody will read it People will get bored Having videos and photos in between will make it interesting This is what makes the difference between a good blog and a great blog As a writer, what tips would you give aspiring bloggers? In our country, the misconception of writing is People feel they need to write a lot and in complicated language using big words from the dictionary As a reviewer myself, I always try to keep it simple Only then will it reach people People might not understand if it is too complicated So writing a blog should be like telling your friend about your experience – Simple Check out his blog Mr. Madras I hope this video will help you in finding a career in blogging Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel for more tips If you enjoyed this video, don’t forget to like, share and comment
