Meal prepping tips with Lifestyle Blogger Caitlin Houston

TERESA: WELCOME BACK. YOU ARE WATCHING “CT STYLE.” EVERYONE WANTS TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE SPENDING THE MOST TIME POSSIBLE WITH THEIR FAMILY, RIGHT? COOKING TAKES UP A LOT OF THAT TIME. SARAH: I FIND IT VERY TYPICAL. LIFESTYLE BLOGGER CAITLIN HOUSTON SHOWS US HOW TO MEAL PREP MAXIMIZE FAMILY TIME. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. GUEST: THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. SARAH: SO YOU SAY REALLY JUST PREPARE EARLY. GUEST: RIGHT. GROCERY SHOP, PREPARE FOODS, WASH YOUR FRUIT, CUT UP VEGETABLES. DO WHATEVER YOU CAN ON A SUNDAY BECAUSE IT IS EASIER TO WHIP UP DINNER DURING THE WEEK AND SPEND MORE TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY OR HAVE YOUR OWN TIME. [LAUGHTER] SARAH: YOU JUST GOT A FARAWAY LOOK IN YOUR EYES. TERESA: YOU HAVE THESE GREAT SCHEDULES HERE YOU’VE CREATED. GUEST: RIGHT. THE FIRST THING I BROUGHT IS A MAGNETIC NOTEPAD. I KEEP THIS IN THE FRIDGE. AS WE RUN OUT OF THINGS, I WRITE THIS AND TAKE IT WITH ME TO THE STORE. IT AS A WAY TO SHOW YOUR FAMILY WHAT IS IN THE FRIDGE OR WHAT YOU’RE MAKING FOR THE WEEK. SOMETIMES I’LL HAVE ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS OFF TO THE SIDE AND WHIP THEM ALTOGETHER. SOMETIMES IT IS ALREADY MADE. THIS WAY, THEY KNOW WHAT IS COMING UP. THESE I MADE, THERE’S TWO DIFFERENT ONES. ONE INCLUDES THE WEEKENDS. SOME PEOPLE DON’T COOK ON THE WEEKENDS, SO THIS IS FOR THAT KIND OF SCHEDULE. THIS ONE ACTUALLY HAS A PLACE WITH THINGS TO BUY. SARAH: SO THIS IS NOT EASY. FOR ME, I AM NOT GOOD AT MEAL PREP, BUT I STARTED MAKING A MENU LIKE THIS FOR THE WEEK, AND IT REALLY HELPS. IT JUST GIVES STRUCTURE WHEN YOU GO TO THE STORE AND A PLAN EVERY DAY. GUEST: RIGHT. YOU CAN DO IT WITH BREAKFAST FOODS. SOMETIMES I’LL MAKE EGG MUFFINS OR SANDWICHES. YOU CAN DO THEM FOR LUNCH, TOO. WHEN IT COMES TO PACKING LUNCHES FOR KIDS, HAVING ALL THE FRUIT WASHED AHEAD OF TIME SAVES SO MUCH TIME IN THE MORNING. BUYING THOSE PREPACKAGED SNACKS HELPS, TOO. I BUY SNACKS IN BULK ONCE A MONTH AND THROW IT ALL TOGETHER WHEN I AM MAKING LUNCH IN THE MORNING. TERESA: HE BROUGHT SOME EXAMPLES WITH YOU. GUEST: I DID. HERE’S AN EXAMPLE OF SOME WASHED FRUIT. I LIKE TO EAT CHICKEN SALAD, SO I WILL MAKE IT FOR LUNCH OR SOMETIMES DINNER. YOU CAN PUT IT ON A SANDWICH. MY DAUGHTERS ARE WEIRD ABOUT CARROTS, SO THEY’VE JUST LIKE THEM RAW, SHREDDED. TERESA: EASY. GUEST: RIGHT. I MAKE MEATBALLS AHEAD OF TIME ALWAYS. SARAH: AND THEY ARE GREAT TO HAVE FROZEN. I JUST HAVE A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT THE FRUIT. IF YOU WASH IT AHEAD OF TIME, IT DOESN’T GET SOGGY? GUEST: IF YOU SOAK YOUR FRUIT IN A MIXTURE OF VINEGAR AND WATER, IT ACTUALLY MAKES IT LAST LONGER. THERE’S CERTAIN FRUITS YOU HAVE TO STORE IN THE FRIDGE AND CERTAIN FRUITS YOU STORE IN THE COUNTER. FRIDGE AND CERTAIN FRUITS YOU STORE IN THE COUNTER. I CAN’T SWIM EMBER OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. TERESA: A SEGMENT — I CAN’T REMEMBER OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. TERESA: A SEGMENT FOR ANOTHER DAY. [LAUGHTER] SARAH: WE WERE BOTH INTRIGUED BY THESE REPS BECAUSE THEY LOOK SO EASY. GUEST: THE BEAN AND CHEESE BURRITOS ARE MAINLY FOR THE KIDS. MY DAUGHTERS LOVE REFRIED BEANS AND SHREDDED CHEESE ON A TORTILLA. THEY TAKE ONE MINUTE IN THE MICROWAVE. I MAKE THEM IN BULK, AND IT IS GREAT FOR A LUNCH OR A SNACK. SARAH: THIS IS GREAT FOR A HEALTHY DINNER OPTION. GUEST: I LIKE TO MAKE MEALS JUST FOR MY HUSBAND AND TELL HIM THEY ARE IN THEIR. YOU CAN TAKE A DRY ERASE MARKER AND WRITE ON THE CONTAINER SO HE KNOWS IT IS FOR HIM. THAT IS SOME SALMON WE GRILLED ON A SUNDAY. YOU DON’T WANT TO EAT IT ON FRIDAY. YOU WANTED IN THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK, AND SOME RICE AND VEGETABLES. SARAH: THAT’S NOT A HUSBAND PORTION, THE. I HUSBAND WOULD — PORTION, THOUGH. MY HUSBAND WOULD EAT FOUR TIMES THAT PORTION. [LAUGHTER] GUEST: SOMETIMES HE EATS TWO FOR DINNER. TERESA: YOUR KIDS WENT OFF TO SCHOOL THIS WEEK. WE HAVE SOME PICTURES. GUEST: THEY DID. EMILY WENT TO PRESCHOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME. SHE WAS NOT TOO KEEN ON GOING. SARAH: HOW TO DAY TWO GO? GUEST: IT WAS GREAT. IT WAS THREE MINUTES, AND THEN HE WAS FINE. SARAH: AND YOUR OTHER DAUGHTER? GUEST: SHE STARTED KINDERGARTEN LAST WEEK, AND DIDN’T EVEN LOOK BACK. I WAS SOBBING OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL, AND SHE JUST WALKED IN. THERE’S THE GIRLS AND MY HUSBAND AND I CELEBRATING LAST WEEK. SARAH: SO YOU SHARE A LOT OF PHOTOS LIKE THAT ON YOUR INSTAGRAM PAGE IN YOUR BLOG. TELL US WHERE WE CAN FIND YOU, AND WHAT EXACTLY YOU FOCUS ON. GUEST: I’VE BEEN ON HERE BEFORE, BUT I’VE REBRANDED, AND NOW IT IS CAITLIN HOUSTON BLOG. YOU CAN FIND ANYTHING ABOUT THE LIFE AND STYLE OF A CONNECTICUT MOM. IT IS NOT JUST MOM STUFF. THERE’S STUFF ON THEIR FOR WOMEN, MARRIAGE, FOOD. IT IS PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING. TERESA: LIFESTYLE. YOU ARE A SOUTHERNER AT ONE POINT? GUEST: I LIVED IN THE SOUTH FOR 12 YEARS ALMOST. CONNECTICUT NATIVE, BUT I HAD SOMETIME IN THE SOUTH. TERESA: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE MEAL PLANS. THIS WILL SAVE SO MUCH TIME AT NIGHT. SARAH: ARE YOU PREPARED? TERESA: I THINK ON SUNDAY I WILL MAKE A LIST.
