Obesity & African-American Women / Detroit Training Center | American Black Journal Full Episode

 >>JUST AHEAD ON AMERICAN
BLACK JOURNAL, THE HEALTH CONCERNS OF MANY
AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN. WE’LL TALK TO A DOCTOR WHO
EXPLAINS ABOUT AN OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF WOMEN WHO ARE
OVERWEIGHT OR DE OBESE. COMING UP NEXT.
>>AMERICA WANTS TO KNOW: WHAT DOES DTE ENERGY DO TO
MAKE DETROIT A BETTER PLACE?>>WE FUNDED 500 JOBS FOR
PEOPLE ALL ACROSS THE STATE.>>INCREDIBLE.
>>THAT IS FANTASTIC.>>SO THIS IS LIKE A PAINT
BY NUMBER, THIS WHOLE THING, RIGHT?
>>COMMUNITIES ARE SUCH GREAT PLACES, AREN’T THEY.
>>SURE ARE.>>LOVE THE SIDING.
>>MEASURE ONCE, CUT TWICE, RIGHT?
>>DTE ENERGY. KNOW YOUR OWN POWER.
>>>WHEN I GROW UPL.>>I WANT TO BE AN
ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEER.>>LAW ENFORCEMENT.
>>COMPUTER SCIENTIST.>>A SUCCESSFUL PERSON.
>>GIVE MICHIGAN’S CHILDREN A CHANCE TO AIM HIGH WITH
QUALITY EARLY EDUCATION. § § § §  >>WELCOME TO AMERICAN
BLACK JOURNAL. I’M STEPHEN HENDERSON.
ON THIS PROGRAM WE’VE OFTEN TALKED ABOUT THE HEALTH
ISSUES FACED BY FREN FRIN MEN, BUT TODAY WE’RE TURNING
OUR ATTENTION TO THE HEALTH CONCERNS OF BLACK WOMEN.
RECENT DATA WITH FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
AND HUMAN SERVICES HAS SOUNDED THE ALARM
ABOUT OBESITY IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN.
THE DEPARTMENT’S OFFICE OF MINORITY HEALTH SAYS FOUR
OUT OF FIVE AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN ARE OVERWEIGHT
OR OBESE. STUDIES CONDUCTED IN 2011
SHOW THAT BLACK WOMEN WERE 80% MORE LIKELY TO BE OBESE
THAN NONHISPANIC WHITE WOMEN, AND FROM 2007 UNTIL 2010,
AFRICAN-AMERICAN GIRLS WERE 80% MORE LIKELY TO BE
OVERWEIGHT THAN NONHISPANIC WHITE GIRLS.
JOINING ME NOW TO TALK ABOUT THIS IS ELAYNE ARTERBERY, A
RADIATION ONCOLOGIST AT SINAI GRACE HOSPITAL IN
DETROIT. WELCOME.
THOSE NUMBERS ARE SHOCKING.>>IT’S STAGGERING.
>>80 TO 90% MORE LIKELY TO BE OVERWEIGHT THAN NONWHITE
HISPANIC WOMEN.>>THOSE ARE BASED ON BODY
MASS INDEX, A COMBINATION OF HEIGHT AND WEIGHT, AND I
THINK MOST OF THEM DON’T TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT BLACK
WOMEN HAVE A HIGHER BONE DENSITY THAN WHITE WOMEN, SO
THEIR BONES ACTUALLY WEIGH MORE.
IF YOU HAVE A BLACK WOMAN WHO IS 5’5″ AT 165 POUNDS,
SHE IS TECHNICALLY, BASED ON HER BMI OVERWEIGHT.
THOSE STUDIES DON’T TOTALLY ACCOUNT —
>>THEY DON’T GIVE AS ACCURATE A PICTURE.
>>THAT SAID, YOU STILL HAVE A HIGH NUMBER OF WOMEN IN
THE OVER 35 BMI, WHICH IS OVERWEIGHT.
I THINK IT’S A NUMBER OF FACTORS.
BLACK WOMEN ARE UNDER A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF STRESS.
DEPENDING ON THEIR WHERE THEY LIVE, MAY NOT HAVE
ACCESS TO GROCERY STORES. IT’S NOT AS SIMPLE AS WOMEN
ARE EATING TOO MUCH.>>OR NOT EXERCISING.
>>I THINK IT’S MULTIFACTORIAL.
SO MANY TIMES WOMEN ARE EXERCISING OR GETTING FIT,
TO GET TO A FAMILY REUNION OR HIGH SCHOOL PARTY, BUT
YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT IT AS A CONTINUOUS LIFESTYLE.
>>IT’S NOT ABOUT DIETING OR LOSING WEIGHT; IT’S ABOUT
TRYING TO EAT HEALTHY ALL THE TIME.
>>AND MAKING SMALL, LITTLE STEPS.
AT OUR HOSPITAL, WE HAVE A CAMPAIGN THAT HAS GONE INTO
THE COMMUNITY OF NO FRIED FOOD OR SODA CONSUMPTION.
THAT ACCOUNTS FOR 40% OF CALORIES IN PEOPLE’S DIETS.
ELIMINATING SODA POP MAY IMPACT THIS PROFILE
FOR WOMEN.>>WHEN WE TALK ABOUT
OBESITY, THAT LEADS TO HIGHER INSTANCES OF —
>>PUTS YOU AT RISK FOR HYPERTENSION, STROKE, KIDNEY
DISEASE, FOR CANCER IN SOME CASES, AT HIGHER RISK.
SO WOMEN HAVE TO LOOK AT THEIR LIFESTYLE CHOICES THAT
ARE CONTRIBUTING TO OBESITY.>>RIGHT.
ANOTHER REAL HIGH INDICATOR AMONG BLACK WOMEN IS FOR
BREAST CANCER AS WELL.>>OH, YEAH.
IT’S REALLY INTERESTING. I READ A STUDY RECENTLY THAT
LOOKED AT SURVIVORS OF BREAST CANCER, WOMEN WHO
HAVE BEEN TREATED. THOSE WHO MAINTAIN THEIR BMI,
THEIR WEIGHT, HAD A HIGHER SURVIVAL RATE INDEPENDENT
OF THEIR STAGE. THOSE WOMEN WHO WERE ABLE TO
MAINTAIN THEIR WEIGHT EVEN AFTER A DIAGNOSIS HAD
IMPROVED SURVIVAL, WHICH IS FASCINATING.
>>AND SO — BUT FOR BLACK WOMEN OVERALL, SURVIVAL
RATES FOR BREAST CANCER ARE NOT WHERE THEY UD BE.
>>THE SURVIVAL’S NOT THERE. DESPITE ADEQUATE TREATMENT,
BLACK WOMEN ARE TWICE AS LIKELY TO DIE OF BREAST
CANCER THAN WHITE WOMEN. PART OF THIS IS A DELAY
IN DIAGNOSIS. THE WOMEN JUST DON’T GET TO
THE MAMMOGRAMS. AND THIS IS INDEPENDENT OF
INSURANCE STATUS.>>IT’S NOT THAT THEY DON’T
HAVE ACCESS, THAT THEY DON’T USE IT.
>>THEY DON’T USE IT. THEY HAVE FEAR, THEY SAY I
DON’T HAVE A FAMILY HISTORY. WE’VE HAD A LOT OF ATTENTION
ABOUT ANGELINA JOLIE WHO JUST HAD THE FAMILY HISTORY.
PEOPLE WITH THAT HISTORY ARE ONLY 3%.
MOST WOMEN HAVE NO FAMILY HISTORY AND NEED TO GET A
ROUTINE MAMMOGRAM AFTER THE AGE OF 40 AS PART OF JUST
ROUTINE HEALTHY LIVING.>>RIGHT.
AND YOU WORK IN ON COLLING. HOW MUCH — ONCOLOGY.
HOW MUCH IS DIET AND WEIGHT AN ISSUE?
>>IT CAN INTERFERE WITH THE TYPE OF CHOICES WE’RE ABLE
TO GIVE PEOPLE, DEPENDING ON THEIR BODY RABBIT.
SOME PEOPLE — THEIR BODY HABIT.
SOME PEOPLE CAN’T GET CHEMOTHERAPY BECAUSE THEY’RE
OVERWEIGHT OR HAVE KIDNEY PROBLEMS.
GET THE MAMMOGRAM, AND DON’T HAVE THAT FEAR, GET IT DONE.
>>THE STATS I WAS TALKING ABOUT IN THE OPEN, SOME MORE
ABOUT GIRLS, NOT WOMEN, HOW MUCH OF THIS IS SOMETHING
THAT STARTS WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG AND THEN CARRIES OVER
INTO ADULTHOOD?>>WELL, THIS IS SORT OF A
RECENT PHENOMENON WE’VE SEEN IN OUR COMMUNITY.
MY MOTHER WENT TO HOWARD UNIVERSITY, AND SHE SAYS
WHEN SHE GRADUATED FROM HOWARD, NO ONE
WAS OVERWEIGHT. IN ONE GENERATION, WE’VE
SEEN THIS WHOLE CHANGE T. COULD BE A COUPLE OF THINGS.
ONE CAN THE INTRODUCTION OF HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IN
THE AMERICAN DIET. SUGAR IS SO EXPENSIVE TO
MANUFACTURE AND PRODUCE, AND CORN SYRUP IS CHEAPER, AND
IT’S IN WIDESPREAD USE IN A LOT OF PRODUCTS.
SOME PEOPLE FEEL IT’S THE CORN SYRUP, NOT THE
CANE SUGAR. I TELL PATIENTS, IF YOU’RE
GOING TO HAVE SUGAR, HAVE REGULAR SUGAR.
>>WHICH, OF COURSE, IT SORT OF GOES AGAINST WHAT YOU
THINK YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO DO.>>EXACTLY.
AND WHAT WE KNOW FOR HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP WITH
BREAST CANCER, PEOPLE FEEL THAT MAY BE ALSO A TRIGGER.
>>I SEE. THAT’S INCREASEING YOUR —
>>YOUR LIKELIHOOD. WE TELL WOMEN WHO HAVE
BREAST CANCER OR A FAMILY HISTORY TO AVOID THE USE OF
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. IT’S IN EVERYTHING.
AND DIET — I MEAN SODAS HAVE A HIGH INCIDENTS OF
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. ALSO, EAT FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES, HAVE A VERY BALANCED DIET, AND AVOID
ANYTHING THAT COMES IN A YELLOW, BLUE,
OR PINK PACKAGE.>>WHY IS THAT?
>>THERE IS SOME ANIMAL DATA THAT SUGGESTS SOME OF THOSE
PRODUCTS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO CANCER RISK.
IT’S BEEN SEEN IN ANIMALS, NOT IN HUMANS, BUT AVOID
ANYTHING PROCESSED. YOU KNOW.
>>NATURAL FOOD.>>NATURAL FOOD.
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, ONE GENERATION AGO, OUR PARENTS
